Stuart Smith is CEO of Buehler Companies, a logistics, moving and storage operation based in Aurora, with roots dating all the way back to 1912. At the core of every great company is its people, and Buehler Companies is no exception.
Under Smith’s leadership, Buehler Companies navigated the tumult of the COVID-19 pandemic without having any employee turnover. At the same time, company revenues increased by 45%.
“That is a great amount of growth in the past three years,” Smith said. “Everyone has bought into our core values and the things we do to keep everyone involved. People are proud to work here. Everyone has to buy into getting everyone living by our core goals and values, and our culture is amazingly strong.” Buehler company’s core values are: Do the right thing. We’re in this together. In the coming years, Smith expects the company to expand its footprint through additional acquisitions and partnerships. It currently has locations in Denver; Colorado Springs; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Fort Worth, Texas. “We will expand horizons within our industry,” he said. When leading through change, smith believes in being present and available for team members for support and assistance. “Always keep your team appraised of the changes present and future. Visibility is so important for a connection with your team. That way they see you in the battle arm in arm with them, “he said. “Clear communication and openness with their needs is what can separate you from the masses.”
Smith has helped build a culture of inclusiveness at Buehler Companies. “We are very welcoming and open to each other,” he said. “We work together for the same common goal. The people that are here are all aiming for the same spot. We are all in this together and people live by it.”
For his servant leadership and desire to continually invest in his people, Smith has been named a Colorado titan hall of famer. His advice to future titans: “Stay humble. Stay focused. Be patient. Listen. Really listen. No. 2: Repeat No. 1.”
As for his legacy, Smith said he hopes he is remembered for building a legacy “of fostering inclusiveness, heartfelt and great leadership, and family.”
