Robert (Robbie) Smith embarked on his entrepreneurial journey in 1982 when he served two sessions for the Georgia House of Representatives under the guidance of Speaker Tom Murphy. It was Murphy who introduced Smith to Bob Strickland, the president of the Trust Company of Atlanta, marking the beginning of Smith’s long and successful career in financial services.

Ultimately, Smith transitioned into consulting, working at Reagan Consulting before joining Hamilton Dorsey Austin in Atlanta and MHBT in Texas. The next chapter of his professional story unfolded after Smith retired and engaged in consulting projects. During this period, he was sought out to spearhead a newly established regional brokerage firm – Oakbridge Insurance – where he now serves as the president and CEO.

Oakbridge Insurance is one of the country’s largest independent insurance, risk management and employee benefits firm. The firm focuses on commercial P&C, employee benefits, surety, personal P&C and risk management services while aspiring to be the premier middle market insurance brokerage firm in the southeast.

“Every facet of Robbie’s career has converged into his role at Oakbridge,” said his staff. “His diverse experiences have collectively set the stage for his current leadership position, including serving as commercial lines department head, running personal lines departments, serving as the chief financial officer for major agencies and assuming the role of chief operating officer and sales leader.”

Under Smith’s leadership, the firm has evolved into a multi-state presence, operating in nine states with nearly $100 million in revenue and a workforce of nearly 400 employees. Smith has also led the firm to form 25 partnerships and create 125 equity holders within the firm.

Smith’s leadership philosophy equips the team members with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive, said his staff. “It’s not about being the star on the field; it’s about ensuring every team member has the chance to shine and contribute to the collective success,” they said. “His role is one of empowerment and thoughtful placement – a philosophy that has propelled him and Oakbridge to success.”

According to Smith, it’s easier to get things done when the environment is non-confrontational when you are surrounded by highly accountable people. “For me, congeniality opens doors and builds relationships; it also creates lasting personal and professional relationships,” he said. “When feedback is given to accountable and coachable people, with the willingness to accept their feedback about performance, an environment is created that leads to better outcomes.”

Did you know?

Congeniality. It’s easier to get things done when the environment is non-confrontational when you are surrounded by highly accountable people. For me, congeniality opens doors and builds relationships. It also creates lasting personal and professional relationships.

Congeniality can also be kryptonite when not surrounded by highly accountable people. It’s not easy to tell people news they don’t want to hear, either about business or their performance. When feedback is given to accountable and coachable people, with the willingness to accept their feedback about my performance, an environment is created that leads to better outcomes.
