President & CEO

SCI Engineering, Inc.

Location: St. Charles, MO

Founded: 1978

Industry: Engineering - Geotechnical, Environmental, Natural Resources, Cultural Resources and Construction Materials Testing

Scott Harding’s journey at SCI Engineering, Inc. began in 1994 when he joined as a project scientist. His leadership in this role quickly led to initiating the firm’s natural resources service group while supporting a diverse client base providing services such as wetland delineation and permitting, stormwater management and endangered species consultation.

“Scott’s focus has always been on defining what the next level is, identifying how to get there and developing a manageable plan to get there,” said his colleagues. “Utilizing those principles, Scott climbed the ranks at SCI and was named president in 2018, a testament to his innovative achievements, strong work ethic and exceptional leadership.”

SCI Engineering, Inc. is a multi-discipline engineering firm that has been providing environmental and geotechnical services as well as natural resources, cultural resources and construction materials testing services since 1978. Since its founding, the firm has grown to six offices and more than 160 employees in Missouri, Illinois, Colorado and Texas.

Under Harding’s leadership, SCI Engineering expanded beyond the St. Louis bi-state area and opened multiple regional offices in Texas and Colorado. According to his staff, Harding has the unique and innate ability of both recognizing and understanding the abilities, capabilities and ambitions of others.

“As a technical leader, Scott has a long resume and reputation of delivering results that drive value for clients,” his staff said. “As a business leader, Scott has demonstrated what incredible power having an open door and ear can have on others and their personal and professional lives.”

Harding stands as a trailblazer in the environmental consulting field and is notably recognized for pioneering initiatives. He developed his first wetland mitigation bank approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District and developed the first stream mitigation bank in the country. He has provided expert testimony to U.S. congressional sub-committees and other influential groups on matters about the Clean Water Act and its regulations.

As a leader, Harding believes it is not enough for a leader to commit to personal growth. “One must know the strengths and weaknesses of those within their organization and be willing to invest in them and in their growth and development,” he said. “They must empower their team members and encourage them to take initiative.”

Leading by example is important to Harding, too. “A positive leader inspires others by being enthusiastic about their vision and goals,” he said. “Their positivity is infectious.”

For his initiative, commitment to growth and influence in the industry, Harding has been named a Titan 100.

Did you know?

My secret superpower is my positive attitude. I see challenges as opportunities, and I do not allow myself to be derailed by setbacks. Challenges and setbacks are both opportunities to grow as an individual and as an organization. My faith allows me to maintain this positivity even in tough situations that could easily throw me off course and cause my attitude to change. I aim to be someone that colleagues inside as well as outside my organization naturally gravitate towards, even while navigating challenges that arise.
