With an extensive background in managing and cultivating cultural institutions, Dr. Ashley Jordan brings a wealth of experience and a profound understanding of the importance of memorializing and celebrating the African American experience in the U.S. in her current role as the president and chief executive officer of the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

Founded in 1976 in celebration of the nation’s Bicentennial, the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) is the first institution funded and built by a major municipality to preserve, interpret and exhibit the heritage of African Americans. The museum is committed to telling the story of African Americans in all its permutations: family life, the Civil Rights movement, arts and entertainment, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law and technology. The AAMP currently houses four galleries and one auditorium.

Under her leadership and guidance, the museum is poised to embark on an inspiring journey as it approaches its 50th anniversary and prepares to transition to its new home on the Philadelphia Parkway. “Her strategic vision and innovative approach to storytelling promise to invigorate the museum’s mission, ensuring that it remains a beacon of knowledge, empowerment and inspiration for generations to come,” said her staff. “Dr. Jordan’s leadership not only honors the legacy of those who have fought tirelessly for African American equality and justice but also paves the way for future endeavors that will continue to uplift and empower communities.”

Through innovative exhibitions, immersive experiences and strategic partnerships, Jordan has expanded the reach and impact of the museum. She has also prioritized community engagement, accessibility and inclusivity in all aspects of AAMP’s operations. Her efforts have led to an appointment by President Joe Biden to the National Museum and Library Services Board in Washington, D.C., where she will play a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives that promote access, equity, and diversity in museums and libraries across the nation.

Jordan has embraced servant leadership and focuses on the positives while mentoring others. “I am internally optimistic – always finding the gold in people so that they can flourish within the organization and professionally,” she said. “I strive to inspire individuals and communities to connect with their heritage, embrace their identity, and work toward a more just and equitable society.”

If Jordan could give her younger self some advice, she said it would be to cultivate resilience. “The road ahead will be filled with challenges and setbacks, but it’s how you respond to them that will define your journey,” she said. “Learn from failures, adapt to change and never lose sight of your goals.”
