When Cathy Lockyer Moulton was a small child, she knew she wanted to be a diplomat working in the Soviet Union. She learned Russian, attended school for a summer in the Soviet Union, and applied for a job with the embassy in Moscow. Shortly before she was offered the job at the embassy, her grandfather, who started building and managing multifamily housing units, passed away.
“I turned my dream job down to work for my grandmother and father to learn the family business instead,” said Lockyer Moulton. “Today, as a landlord, I get to be a diplomat every day, but I work in Pennsylvania instead of Russia.”
Lockyer Moulton said when she stepped into the business – Thomas Wynne LP – she learned that being a landlord is a lot like being a diplomat. “When I started, the company embraced the traditional hostile environment between a landlord and tenant,” she said. “Over the years, I have applied a diplomatic sense to the role and created a harmonious relationship for all who are a part of our communities.”
As a result, revenues and profits have increased year over year, even during 2008 and the pandemic. “The lesson is that housing has a natural foundation in warmth and a caring environment,” said Lockyer Moulton. “The new strategy I employed, which is now embraced by the entire team, results in lower turnover, higher yields and greater satisfaction all around.”
Thomas Wynne, LP is a family-run multifamily housing firm with a mission to treat everyone as a member of the family. The company’s motto is Easy Living – Friendly Service.
“As president of Thomas Wynne LP, Cathy has demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic vision, driving notable achievements both individually and for the company as a whole,” said her staff. Under her guidance, Thomas Wynne Apartments in Wynnewood, PA, has garnered significant recognition and accolades, including the ApartmentRatings top rated community award and a top ten ranking for property management companies for three consecutive years.
In her role as president, Lockyer Moulton implemented a cultural awareness program, and a performance bonus program and played a pivotal role in the development of a new apartment community, the Reserve at Maybrook.
As a leader, Lockyer Moulton said servant leadership is key to success. “The leader who believes that we are a small cog in a larger machine, who strives to make their corner of the world a better place, is a leader people want to follow with a joyful spirit,” she said.
