Mitch Gyger spent three years in college working in the security guard industry followed by five years of working full-time. This experience served as his testing ground for ideas on how to run and operate a business as well as lead and manage people.
“I quickly learned a lot about what it took to manage and care for others well, and what effect that had not just on their performance but on them as a complete person,” said Gyger. “Taking this approach of servant leadership and people first, I knew there was a better way to operate a security officer services business, one that starts with the employee instead of the customer.”
Gyger now serves as the president of OPS Security Group, a security officer service with a mission to lead the way in caring for, compensating, and offering careers to its people, who in turn provide unparalleled professional service to the firm’s clients.
“While my team and I have achieved significant milestones over the past 11 years, we acknowledge the role of fortuitous circumstances, albeit augmented by diligent efforts,” said Gyger. “Nonetheless, it is undeniable that our sustained success, evidenced by our expansion in scale, operational sophistication, profitability, and adept problem-solving capabilities, attests to our efficacy.”
According to Gyger, central to the success of the firm has been the team’s unwavering dedication, which has propelled them forward even in the face of challenges and setbacks. “By staying ahead of industry trends and proactively identifying opportunities for growth, we have been able to position ourselves as a high-growth company in the security officer services sector,” he said.
These efforts have earned the firm recognition as a multi-year Soaring 76 award winner, multi-year Philly 100 award winner, and the Inc. 5000 award. In addition, OPS Security Group received the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce excellence award, the Metro Philly’s best award, and the Philadelphia Civic 50 award.
As a leader, Gyger said it’s important to embody stewardship and empowerment. “Stewardship sees leaders as guardians, deeply dedicated to nurturing resources with a focus on long-term sustainability and impact,” he said. “This approach fosters a sense of collective purpose and respect, inspiring every team member to contribute to a mission that transcends mere profit.”
Noting that his superpower is mental toughness, Gyger said it is clear that one cannot outwork the sheer volume of tasks. “I have learned that I am fully capable of dedicating the necessary time over extended periods to achieve our objectives,” he said. “This realization underscores my commitment to persistence and resilience, qualities essential for long-term success.”
