The corporate values that Kim Despres prioritizes in her role as the chief executive officer of Circle the City are rooted in leading by example, fostering open communication, acknowledging hard work and cultivating a culture of accountability. “Inspired by mentors who embodied these values, I believe in leading with actions that reflect our shared principles,” said the Titan 100 Hall of Fame nominee.

Circle the City is an Arizona-based nonprofit organization that provides healthcare to men, women and children facing homelessness in Maricopa County. The organization is a federally qualified health center that offers several modalities of care. Last year, Circle the City provided healthcare to more than 8,000 people and has become one of the most dynamic nonprofits in the country, garnering national attention for its model of care and success.

In the past two years, Despres said her proudest accomplishment has been securing the largest grant in Circle the City’s history, amounting to $6 million. This transformative grant has empowered the nonprofit to expand its outpatient clinic capacity and establish a cutting-edge Medical Respite Center in the East Valley.

“Achieving this milestone was a collaborative effort involving meticulous planning and coordination with my executive leadership team, key internal stakeholders and external partners,” said Despres. “By envisioning our future, conducting a need assessment, and actively seeking input from stakeholders, we ensured that our expansion aligned seamlessly with the evolving needs of our vulnerable population.”

Recognizing team efforts is paramount, said Despres. She makes it a weekly habit to send thank-you and gift cards to staff, acknowledging their contributions. “This personal touch emphasizes the significance of their work,” she said. “With clear values, we’ve created a workplace environment that fosters growth, collaboration and shared success.”

In contemplating the legacy she aspires to leave, Despres said she reflects on her 40-year career characterized by a journey from an entry-level nursing position to leadership roles. “Fortunate to receive guidance, training, and mentorship, I embraced each opportunity to learn, progress and prepare for the next step in my career,” she said. “Believing in leading by example, I worked diligently to gain firsthand experience, ensuring I could authentically understand and relate to my team.”

For the next generation, Despres said her advice centers on the enduring power of relationships, the value of seeking feedback, continuous learning and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

“Early in my career, I mistakenly believed that more hours equated to greater success, but I’ve since learned that a balanced approach enhances both professional efficacy and personal well-being,” she said.
