With a career spanning over 30 years in transportation engineering and land surveying, ReJena “Jeni” Lyon began her journey at Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick Inc. (HLR), a leading engineering firm, in 1999. She has held pivotal roles, including survey department manager, treasurer and executive vice president, before ascending to her current position as president of the company in 2018.
Under Lyon’s stewardship, HLR has doubled its net revenue, expanded its workforce, and enhanced its physical footprint with strategic office openings and headquarters relocations. These efforts have facilitated a projected 85% increase in net revenue from 2021 through 2024. Beyond financial achievements, Lyon’s focus on sustainability has earned HLR recognition, including the 2024 engineering excellence merit award for its eco-friendly renovations.
A passionate advocate for the future of land surveying, Lyon has made significant strides in advancing the profession. Her efforts with the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association (IPLSA) include launching the surveyor and mapping technician training program and supporting the groundbreaking surveying and geomatics bachelor’s degree at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
“Jeni’s leadership in supporting this program underscores her commitment to building a strong pipeline of future surveyors, creating greater awareness for the profession, and ensuring it is prepared for future challenges,” said her staff.
Lyon’s leadership philosophy is centered on HLR’s “work hard | have fun | give back” culture, which fosters employee engagement, collaboration and community service. This culture has been recognized with multiple accolades, including the AEC employer of choice award and the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE) 2024 best place to work designation.
“By fostering an environment that emphasizes the development of natural strengths while addressing weaknesses, I believe we can maximize our potential,” said Lyon. “I actively involve employees at all experience levels in strategic planning, allowing them to contribute their insights and expertise to shape our future.”
Lyon’s impact extends beyond HLR. As the volunteer board chair for the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce, she leads initiatives that drive local economic development and business growth. Her dedication to community service is mirrored in HLR’s philanthropic endeavors, which include STEM program sponsorships and local school partnerships.
Looking ahead, Lyon is preparing HLR for a seamless leadership transition, ensuring its values and vision endure. “Jeni has dedicated herself to establishing an award-winning culture rooted in hard work, employee engagement, and community service—a culture that, while intangible, radiates throughout the company and can be felt the moment one walks through the door of an HLR office,” said her staff.
