Recognizing 100 CEOs & C-level Executives

One of the greatest leadership lessons David G. Voss, Jr. learned this year is that you must always trust your gut. “When you feel that something isn’t right, it most likely isn’t,” he said. “It’s important to speak up immediately and express your concerns.”

With more than four decades in leadership, trusting his gut has served Voss well as the president of Miron Construction Co. Inc.

Miron Construction Co. Inc. has been providing professional construction services to clients throughout the Midwest, with an expanded geographical reach across the U.S., for more than a century. Miron is a privately held, family-owned company in its fourth generation with a culture and passion for building instilled in every team member.

Since Miron was founded in 1918, the company has grown exponentially. It has more than doubled in sales (which now exceed $1.68 billion) in the past 10 years and has grown to approximately 1,700 employees.

Under Voss’ leadership, the firm opened a new office in Marquette, Michigan, and constructed a new office in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. “This expansion aims to grow our presence in these communities and allows us to better serve our clients,” said Voss.

In addition, Miron won its largest bid to date – a $163 million Science and Health Sciences Building at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The firm was also awarded the $162 million Dane County Jail consolidation.

Another substantial accomplishment was the renovation at its corporate headquarters, helping to achieve the goal of creating an environment that is centered around its employees. “Maintaining the family feeling that has been ingrained in our culture since the company’s inception is incredibly important to me, and the decisions we make as an organization are aligned with that team-centered approach,” said Voss, a two-time Titan 100. “We view each and every team member as a critical part of the Miron family.”

To champion these efforts, Voss has led the introduction of an on-site clinic for employees and their families, making healthcare more affordable and accessible. Voss said he has seen the company grow from less than a hundred people to more than a thousand, but that didn’t happen by accident.

“It happened because we continue to employ people who are extremely passionate about what they do,” he said. “As leaders, while it is critical that we provide support and direction, sometimes we also just have to step aside and let our team members run – they are the ones who are going to take our company to new heights.”
