Medical Group Management Association (MGMA)

Location: Englewood, CO

Founded: 1926

Industry: Healthcare / Medical Practice Management

It was in middle school when Dr. Halee Fischer-Wright realized she wanted to help people. This need to help others is why she chose to become a physician. After leading her own pediatrics practice for several years, Fischer-Wright joined Rose Medical Center where she eventually became president of the hospital.

“We grew the organization from 75 physicians to 560 with a best-in-class ranking,” said Fischer-Wright. She then spent two years as a chief medical officer.

It was while working within these organizations that Fischer-Wright earned a master’s degree in medical management and a certificate in executive coaching. “As a consultant and partner with CultureSync, I worked with executive teams in Fortune 100 companies, specializing in strategy, leadership development and building high-performance teams,” she said.

According to Fischer-Wright, her work as a physician, leader and consultant helped her understand that the best place to deliver healthcare is in the medical practice and the best way to help the most people is to help medical practices succeed. This pertains to their finances, leadership strategies and innovation, she said.

“I could see the potential in transforming a traditional healthcare association with a rich history into a modern education, advocacy, data and service organization that could respond to the needs of the rapidly changing healthcare market,” said Fischer-Wright. The desire to see this potential to fruition led her to Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), where she currently serves as the president and CEO.

At its core, MGMA exists to inspire excellence and drive meaningful change by helping its members transform the delivery of healthcare through better business management of their medical practice groups. According to her colleagues, Fischer-Wright has strengthened the organization financially and culturally, by expanding and restructuring the consulting team to better serve the organization and its members.”

As a 94-year old national organization, MGMA is widely respected in the healthcare industry. Under Fischer-Wright’s leadership, her staff said that the organization is dedicated to building a foundation for future sustainability and growth.

Under her leadership, MGMA has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and won the Workplace Health Achievement Index Recognition Bronze Level in 2018 and 2019. Fischer-Wright herself has been selected for Marshall Goldsmith’s 100 Coaches, recognized as Becker’s Hospital Reviews 100 Great Leaders in Healthcare, and Modern Healthcare’s Top 100 Healthcare Leaders. In 2008, she co-authored Tribal Leadership with Dave Logan and John King.

As a leader, Fischer-Wright believes that “every person on a team or in an organization has more influence than they realize which can be instrumental in enhancing operations and services ” For her keen leadership skills and influence within the industry, Fischer-Wright has been named a Titan of industry.

Fun Fact:

As a pediatrician, Dr. Halee once had to extract a horde of Trix cereal from the sinuses of a little boy by crushing them with her palm first. Actually, she has extracted many things from many noses in her professional career.
