As the chief human resources officer at Kreischer Miller, Mary Ellen Harris has focused on employee development programs in the past two years. As a Titan 100 Hall of Fame inductee, Harris has created a month-long customized onboarding and training program for all new hires, created a manager skills development program, and has engaged in career counseling and mentoring.
“These transformational programs were created by collaborating with other leaders in the firm to identify the needs and solutions focused on the development of our people,” said Harris. “Collectively, these programs have had favorable impacts including shortening the learning curve for our newest team members which enables our employees to be productive and able to contribute sooner.”
Founded in 1975, Kreischer Miller is renowned for its comprehensive range of services, including audit and accounting, tax strategies, business advisory, human capital resources and technology solutions. The firm caters to growth-oriented private companies, offering specialized knowledge in industries such as manufacturing, distribution, construction, real estate, not-for-profits and more.
In the next five years, Harris said her vision revolves around fostering a work environment where innovation, collaboration and growth flourish. “I aim to uphold our firm’s core values while embracing emerging best practices and people-centric trends in our industry,” she said. “By prioritizing the well-being and development of our team members, we ensure that they remain motivated, engaged and equipped with the skills needed to do their best work.”
To lead in the industry, Harris said she will continue to empower others, sharing knowledge and insights gained from her experience. “By nurturing talent within our organization and beyond, we contribute to the advancement of the accounting and tax services profession,” she said. “I recognize the importance of advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace and the broader community, and by championing these values, we create a more welcoming and equitable environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
As a leader, Harris said her superpower is empathy. “I excel at truly listening to others, understanding their emotions and relating to their thoughts,” she said. “This deep empathy forms the foundation of my interactions and enhances my ability to connect meaningfully with those I assist.”
As for her legacy, Harris said she aspires to leave behind one that is defined by values such as kindness, integrity and humility. “I believe that in any endeavor, treating others with respect and compassion is paramount,” she said.
