Stephanie Maderazzo-Hughes’ early introduction to the business world came through her father, the founder of Canyon State Electric. From a young age, she was immersed in the environment of construction and electrical contracting, beginning with simple tasks like answering phones and running errands. Her involvement escalated as she grew older, shadowing her father as he managed critical aspects of the business, from financial reporting to job estimations and leadership strategic meetings.
After graduating with a degree in finance, Maderazzo-Hughes was fully integrated into the company, and recognizing her potential and drive, her father created opportunities for her to grow within the company. When her father stepped down in the mid-2010s, Maderazzo-Hughes and her brother took over as co-chief executive officers.
Canyon State Electric has a mission to better lives and communities by offering a single-source solution to electrical construction that provides opportunities for achievement and growth.
Under Maderazzo-Hughes’ leadership, the company has weathered economic challenges but also thrived and expanded. She was instrumental in diversifying the company’s services, enhancing employee benefits and implementing cutting-edge technologies. Since she stepped into her role, the firm has added a low-voltage department, expanded its training offerings to include a fully accredited, in-house apprenticeship program and launched a nonprofit focused on preventing construction suicides.
Maderazzo-Hughes’ commitment extends beyond business success to encompass social responsibility. She has spearheaded numerous community engagement initiatives with organizations such as the American Heart Association, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Arizona Helping Hands. Under her stewardship, Canyon State Electric has been nationally recognized by organizations such as Inc., Fast Company, Independent Electrical Contractors and Real Leaders Magazine. Maderazzo-Hughes was also named one of the most influential women in commercial real estate.
“Stephanie’s holistic vision not only aims to elevate operational standards and employee well-being but also sets new benchmarks in corporate social responsibility within the construction sector,” said her staff. “She has been instrumental in transforming the workplace culture, breaking away from the traditional norms often associated within the construction industry.”
Maderazzo-Hughes said that dedication is paramount to a long-lasting, successful business. “Many leaders are too quick to give up when they don’t find instant success, and the truth is, all businesses share wins and losses,” she said. “You have to get through the tough times to reap the benefits of a healthy, thriving organization.”
As a yogi, Maderazzo-Hughes emphasizes the importance of a work-life balance. “By balancing my life as a leader with fitness, motherhood, and friendship, I’m able to be the best person I can be for myself and everyone else,” she said. “I believe holding everything in equilibrium is a superpower in and of itself.”
