In his role as chairman and chief executive officer of Hightower Advisors, a leader in the financial services industry, Bob Oros said his greatest leadership lesson revolves around adaptability, especially when it comes to fostering an environment that recognizes mental health and its impact on his employees and clients.
“This is an issue that affects everyone, and I believe leaders can make it a safe topic to discuss in the workplace,” he said. As a result, Oros led the initiative to roll out a program called “mental well-th,” designed to open up conversations and provide resources to support the firm’s people.
The firm operates with a mission to redefine wealth as “Well-th. Rebalanced.” It’s a philosophy that extends beyond finances to encompass family, health, mental wellness, philanthropy and legacy. Under Oros’ guidance, Hightower Advisors has implemented robust tools and capabilities to better serve clients and attract new ones.
Key initiatives include chartering a national trust company and expanding services for business owners and investment solutions. The firm has also been highly acquisitive, completing over 50 transactions since Oros took the helm, including the largest deal in its history, set to be announced in late 2024.
Hightower Advisor’s growth under Oros’ leadership extends beyond acquisitions. The firm leverages innovative strategies, such as turnkey seminar programs and business valuation services, to drive organic growth. These efforts have resulted in record client retention rates of 99%. Hightower has also introduced centralized functions and diversified service offerings to enhance scale and margins.
Committed to fostering a supportive workplace, Oros, a two-time Titan 100, has championed hybrid work environments that balance flexibility and collaboration. Through initiatives like “engagement days,” a culture committee, and leadership development programs, Hightower Advisors prioritizes teamwork and mentorship. The company has partnered with the Ritz Carlton Leadership Center to define “The Hightower Way” and has launched programs like The Hightower Center for Leadership to prepare the next generation of leaders through immersive, real-world business simulations.
Outside of the company, Oros takes pride in giving back to his alma mater, Central Michigan University, by funding a student-led investment fund and mentoring students. He frequently speaks at colleges and high schools to inspire the next generation to explore careers in wealth management. In 2023, he delivered CMU’s commencement address and received an honorary doctorate for his contributions to the industry and education.
Being named a Titan 100 has provided Oros with a platform to connect with like-minded leaders, driving both personal and professional growth, he said. “I have grown to recognize that the personal recognition as a Titan 100 is really a reflection of our team and company that I have the privilege to represent.”
