Recognizing 100 CEOs & C-level Executives

As the president of City Colleges of Chicago – Malcolm X College, David Sanders said he does not need a strategy to fuel his passion – the students who come to the college daily provide him with the motivation he needs.

“It is essential that we do everything we can to ensure the success of our students, and we must be laser-focused on eliminating the barriers to their success and continue to encourage students to engage in the education process,” he said. “Every student can learn, and we must continue to find ways to engage them in the learning and be altruistic about finding ways to ensure their success.”

Sanders said his leadership philosophy of “What if that was your child, what would you do?” drives every decision, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to realize their academic and personal potential.

Under Sanders’ guidance, Malcolm X College has seen a remarkable 29.4% enrollment growth over three years, adding 2,473 students. He has also positioned the college as a forward-thinking institution by establishing a Center for Teaching and Learning. This hub offers faculty, staff, and administrators opportunities to enhance their skills and adapt to the evolving educational landscape. In collaboration with industry partners, the college convenes advisory committees to ensure its curriculum aligns with workforce needs, equipping students with relevant skills and a competitive edge.

One of Sanders’ most notable accomplishments has been expanding Malcolm X College’s footprint and programs. The college has embarked on several high-impact projects, including a $20 million expansion of the west campus, a proposed $40-50 million south campus focusing on health sciences, and a $15 million nursing program at Kennedy-King College.

Additionally, Sanders spearheaded a study abroad program, engaging 71 African American male students and their chaperones in cultural exchanges across Africa.

Inspired by students’ resilience and aspirations, he views education as a “passport to the future.” His dedication to breaking down systemic barriers has spurred initiatives such as the Strategic Equity Plan and the Achieving the Dream Equity Plan. These efforts address challenges like housing insecurity and transportation access, exemplified by the introduction of a coach bus to connect underserved communities with educational opportunities.

Recognition as a two-time Titan 100 brought Sanders exposure, accolades and attention he never expected. “While I have never sought recognition for the work I do since I believe what I am doing is by assignment, it is certainly humbling and exciting to be thought of in this light,” he said. “I believe this recognition gives me the opportunity to drive the work of higher education and amplify my voice to help eliminate the barriers to student success inherent in the education system.”
