Jason Newton joined Stellar Recognition Inc., a third-generation, family-owned manufacturing company specializing in the awards and recognition industry, initially viewing it as a temporary role in 2008. However, his passion for the industry quickly grew.
Within a decade, he launched the Runner’s High Medallion division, which became the third-largest provider of race medallions in the United States. In 2019, Newton assumed leadership as president, facing immediate challenges, including financial improprieties and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As an event-based company, our sales took an unprecedented hit, and we found ourselves in uncharted territory with 100 dedicated employees and a sudden halt in our core products,” said Newton. “But instead of succumbing to despair, we sought out opportunities, and what ensued in the following months was a testament to our collective spirit and determination.”
Newton and his team jumped into innovative strategies and decisive actions, such as pivoting to produce over 600,000 protective acrylic barriers for schools and businesses to open new growth opportunities for the firm.
Under Newton’s leadership, Stellar Recognition has doubled in size over eight years and pursued strategic acquisitions to strengthen its position in the recognition market. A key driver of this growth is the company’s focus on enhancing domestic production, improving operational efficiency and fostering innovation. Through partnerships with organizations like IMEC and lean process consultants, Stellar Recognition has implemented cutting-edge technologies and streamlined workflows.
Newton attributes much of his success to a commitment to continuous learning. He has participated in programs like Goldman Sachs 10,000 small businesses and Vistage. He is an active member of industry associations, including serving as the youngest-ever board member of the Awards Associates of America.
As a leader, Newton said he is most proud of his team’s resilience during the pandemic, a time when their adaptability and determination kept the company thriving. “At the end of the day, I believe that our strength at Stellar is our team – it’s about recognizing their efforts and ensuring our products are not just awards but true symbols of appreciation,” he said. “In a nutshell, while some might see the milestones and achievements, I see the journey, the challenges, the growth, and most importantly, the incredible team and industry peers I’ve had the privilege of working alongside.”
Looking ahead, Newton envisions Stellar Recognition as a model of innovation and growth. Over the next five years, the company aims to expand its domestic production capabilities, pursue acquisitions that align with its values, and continue setting benchmarks for excellence in the awards and recognition industry.
“We are equipping our workforce with the skills and structures needed to meet today’s demands while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow,” he said.
