Ken Arlen has always had a passion for music and a desire to work in the industry. After graduating from Denison University, he pursued jazz saxophone and performed with various bands in Chicago. His keen observations of band leadership sparked a desire to lead and innovate.
In 1983, Arlen was given the opportunity to direct his own band on The Star of Chicago dinner cruise boat, a role that grew to encompass the entertainment direction for over 50 weekly performances across Chicago, Milwaukee and Louisville. When The Star ceased operations in 1989, Arlen transitioned his network of talented performers into the burgeoning Chicago special events market, establishing Arlen Music Productions (AMP).
AMP has since grown into a premier provider of entertainment for high-profile events, from galas and weddings to national political celebrations, including inaugural balls.
“One quality that distinguishes Ken Arlen as an entrepreneur is his ability to combine artistry with business acumen,” said his staff.
The last three years exemplify AMP’s resilience and adaptability under Arlen’s guidance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, with live events restricted, AMP faced a 90% revenue loss in 2020. Yet, through strong leadership and strategic vision, the company rebounded remarkably, achieving near pre-pandemic revenue levels in the final half of 2021. By 2024, AMP recorded its best year ever.
Under Arlen’s leadership, AMP has continually innovated, launching new ensembles such as the Luna Strings and the Skyline Band while modernizing its flagship 15-piece Evolution Orchestra. “Entrepreneurs are always forward-thinking individuals, so it is important to take the time to look back and celebrate accomplishments,” said Arlen.
AMP’s mission is to surpass client expectations while honoring the talent and dedication of its employees. Looking ahead, Arlen envisions continued innovation and growth, expanding AMP’s presence nationally and internationally while refining its offerings. He emphasizes fostering a supportive culture for performers and staff, ensuring AMP remains a leader in creating unforgettable live music experiences.
Arlen’s accomplishments include recognition from industry-leading publications such as Chicago Magazine and Modern Luxury, as well as multiple performances at prestigious events like presidential inaugural balls and major charitable galas. AMP has earned accolades as Chicago’s best entertainment company by BizBash and has contributed to numerous philanthropic causes.
“Our philosophy is to always create new value for our market, and our mantra is often to ‘sell the ticket and then build the ride,’” said Arlen. “As a result of striving for excellence and thinking outside the box, we have become an industry transformer.”
