Nancy Paridy describes herself as a “working leader.”
“I spend time listening to team members and learning what their issues are while also engaging them in problems that we can solve together,” Paridy said. “I am passionate about the work that I do, and I try to engender that passion to others, and part of how I do that is through education and ensuring team members understand context.”
Paridy is the president and chief administrative officer of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, a global leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation headquartered in Chicago. Founded in 1953, the organization has been recognized as the No. 1 rehabilitation hospital in America by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991.
Paridy has championed the organization’s mission of expanding access to world-class rehabilitation services. Notably, she spearheaded the passage of the Dr. Joanne Smith Memorial Rehabilitation Innovation Centers Act, which sets criteria for integrating clinical care and research to share best practices nationwide. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab was among the first facilities recognized under this initiative, solidifying its role as a model for excellence.
She also led efforts to partner with Henry Ford Health system, resulting in the development of a new 72-bed facility in Detroit, ensuring local communities benefit from the organization’s pioneering approaches. Paridy embraces technology’s potential. She launched the AI Test Lab, an initiative that empowers employees to experiment with generative AI tools, enhancing efficiency and focusing on patient care.
As a leader, Paridy said her leadership philosophy prioritizes growth—both for the organization and its people. She has introduced innovative career programs, such as apprenticeship opportunities for support staff and leadership training tailored to all levels.
Recognizing the evolving needs of a multigenerational workforce, Paridy fosters an inclusive environment where team members are equipped to succeed. Her approach blends mentorship, education and hands-on engagement. “Talent in our organization is critical; I do not want people to join Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for a job,” she said. “I want them to join for a career.”
Beyond her professional achievements, Paridy, a two-time Titan 100, said she values the impact of recognition. “The support of the Titan 100 organization to ensure engaging, topical areas of interest while ensuring sufficient time to network has been particularly appreciated,” she said. “These connections have fostered perspective and personal growth as we have discussed shared challenges and opportunities — and as we lead our organizations into the future.”
