Recognizing 100 CEOs & C-level Executives

According to Robiar Smith, chief executive officer of R.B. Pest Solutions, reigniting passion for the pest management business involves a combination of personal growth, engagement with the community and fostering a positive workplace culture. “One of the primary strategies I employ is continuous learning,” she said. “Staying updated with industry trends, attending workshops and exploring new technologies not only enhances my skills but also fuels my enthusiasm.”

This knowledge allows Smith to see the broader impact of the company’s work, from improving public health to contributing to environmental sustainability, which she said keeps her motivation high.

A former information technology professor, Smith transitioned into entrepreneurship, inspired by her parents’ legacy and the values they instilled in her. The “B” in R.B. Pest Solutions honors her parents, Michael and Dolores, whose teachings laid the foundation for her entrepreneurial journey.

R.B. Pest Solutions, based in Chicago, serves commercial and residential clients with a mission to provide effective, reliable and affordable pest management services. Under Smith’s leadership, the company introduced an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy emphasizing sustainability and customer education, reducing pesticide use by 30%.

In 2022, Smith relaunched the Illinois chapter of Women in Pest Management, earning her the woman of impact award from the National Pest Management Association. She also introduced a mobile app, enhancing customer engagement by 40% and repeat business by 25%.

The company’s groundbreaking moment came in 2023 with the launch of Bug Strike, an all-natural insecticide available in travel-friendly 3 oz. and home-use 24 oz. bottles. Designed to combat bedbugs and crawling insects, Bug Strike not only captured market attention but also secured placement in Home Depot. This achievement made Smith the first Black woman to feature a pest control product in the retail giant.

Smith’s dedication extends beyond business growth. She has invested in employee training, enhancing technical skills and customer service capabilities, resulting in a 15% reduction in service time and a 20% increase in customer referrals.

“My hope is that my journey serves as a beacon for future entrepreneurs, especially women of color, instilling the belief that every ceiling is breakable,” said Smith.

Smith’s personal journey is as inspiring as her professional achievements. From the south side of Chicago to becoming a pioneer in a male-dominated field, her story is one of resilience and vision. Her accomplishments include features in ELLE, She ROCKS It, and appearances on Fox 32 and ABC. She has also received numerous accolades, including the 2023 woman of impact award.

“Her journey in the pest control realm highlights the importance of diversification, challenging and reshaping industry norms,” said Smith’s staff.
