Dr. Zara Summers’ journey into the science and technology sectors began as a subsurface microbiologist. Her work in extreme environments, such as iron mines in Northern Minnesota, inspired her belief in the untapped potential of microorganisms. This passion for discovery led her to ExxonMobil, where she contributed to the development of bio-based solutions aimed at decarbonizing the oil and gas industry. Despite the challenges of working within a large corporation, Summers successfully built a robust team focused on exploring the biological potential for carbon capture and utilization.
After nearly 10 years at ExxonMobil, Summers transitioned to LanzaTech, a company that aligned with her personal mission of sustainability and environmental impact. As the chief science officer, Summers has played a key role in advancing the company’s mission to transform waste carbon into valuable products, from sustainable aviation fuel to consumer goods like perfume and clothing.
“She doesn’t just see what is possible today; she envisions what can be achieved tomorrow and works tirelessly to bring that future to life,” said her staff.
Summers helped drive the company’s transition from innovative lab research to large-scale commercial applications, including the development of technologies that convert industrial emissions into ethanol, jet fuel and other valuable products. She has been instrumental in expanding LanzaTech’s global footprint, forging partnerships with companies such as SEKISUI in Japan and LanzaJet in Australia to advance sustainable aviation fuel production.
Summers’ leadership extends beyond scientific expertise. She is known for her ability to unite interdisciplinary teams across engineering, science, and business sectors, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.
“Witnessing the impact we make firsthand, whether it’s through visiting commercial sites or meeting with teams working on groundbreaking projects, keeps me excited for our future achievements and reinforces the significant positive change we are driving,” she said. “Passion is contagious, and I strive to lead by example. I demonstrate my enthusiasm and commitment in everything I do to inspire my colleagues.”
In recognition of her scientific achievements, Summers has received numerous awards, including the ExxonMobil R&D excellence award and the NSF C-DEBI Fellowship. She has also been a vocal advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), particularly for women in STEM. Through her work, Summers has launched programs to increase access to STEM education in underserved communities, championing the importance of diverse perspectives in driving innovation.
