As the leader of TBEY Arts Center Inc., Contessa Cole said her passion is constantly fueled by the impact the organization has on youth and the community.
“Seeing the transformative power of the arts firsthand and how it builds confidence, fosters creativity and provides a safe space for self-expression reminds me daily of why I embarked on this journey,” she said. “I continuously reignite my passion by staying connected to our mission and the individuals we serve. Interacting with students, witnessing their growth, and hearing their stories of success and resilience gives me an immense sense of purpose.”
The mission of TBEY is to strengthen young people through exposure to the arts and opportunities for creative expression. Creatives ages 2-19 receive professional arts instruction, enjoy performances and exhibits, and receive tutoring, mentoring and coaching to achieve academically and pursue their interest in the arts.
Founded in 2000, Cole’s Black Entertainment & Youth Center Inc. (now TBEY Arts Center) emerged from the urgent need to provide arts programs for Milwaukee’s youth. With the decline of arts in public schools, TBEY became a beacon of creativity and self-expression for local children. The center quickly became a community gem, offering inclusive arts education to help students excel academically and socially. For over two decades, TBEY has provided transformative arts experiences for diverse young people in disadvantaged communities.
“Contessa is a humble powerhouse, embodying both modesty and strength in her leadership and vision,” said her staff. “She transformed a personal passion into a tangible reality, creating spaces and opportunities for all creatives in Milwaukee.”
Her accolades include being named a 2024 UNCF Milwaukee mastermind, a 2022 woman of influence by the Milwaukee Business Journal, and a woman of impact by The KNOW Milwaukee chapter. Cole received the CEO of me business award from the Center for Teaching Entrepreneurship and was featured in Who’s Who in Black Milwaukee. Being featured on “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” was a moment that further amplified the significance of her work at TBEY and its impact on the broader community.
“A core aspect of our vision is to be a pipeline for emerging artists, and we are fostering an environment where artists not only refine their craft but also gain practical experience that prepares them for long-term careers,” said Cole. “By providing platforms for them to teach, perform, and collaborate, TBEY helps artists develop the entrepreneurial and leadership skills essential for success in today’s evolving economy.”
